Mobility Impaired Deer Hunts

Since 1996, TCA has conducted 23 mobility impaired deer hunts.  These events were done in conjunction with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources or a MD group.  To date 156 hunters have participated in our Scott Place hunts and have harvested 43 deer.
The 2010 fall SCDNR hunt will be on October 29-30.

The Scott Place

These weekend hunts are held at The Scott Place - 3964 Island Ford Road in Newberry County.  The 1,462 acre property is owned by our sister company, TCA Timberlands, Inc.  The property has 3.4 miles of river frontage on the Little River.   The two story house was built in 1840.  The one story handicap accessible addition was added in 1995.

The SCDNR hunts are for severely mobility impaired individuals only.  The eligibility requirements are very specific and include those who are permanently confined to a wheel chair, permanently require some type of mechanical aid such as a walker, braces, etc or have had a single or double leg amputation.  Applications can be downloaded at the DNR website www.dnr.state.sc.us or call SCDNR in Union, S. C. at 803-427-5140.

Hunting Blinds

In 2003, all of our hunting blinds were replaced with new ones.
They include plywood floors with ramps and plywood roofs.
Each has three adjustable shooting rails (32" to 46").   Each blind is brushed in with fresh, green cedar branches for both camouflage and scent control.  In 2007 four fiberglass igloos blinds were added.  Steve Avinger (Conway, S. C.) is shown here before he took a 2 1/2 year old doe at the SCDNR 2003 hunt.

Food Plots

Currently we maintain 26 food plots - from 1 to 5 acres in size.  In 2010 these plots are/will be planted in clover, oats, corn, peas, milo, and soybeans.

Deer Herd

oct12204.jpg (47052 bytes)

We try not to harvest a buck until it has reached at least 3 1/2 years old.   At that time, the rack should be outside the ears. This 2 1/2 year old youngster in this picture is not a shooter. During the past
15 years,  65% of our total deer harvest has been does.

Old Bucks

This old buck was named Alaska after he fed under a persimmon tree.  The picture was captured by our Game-Vu digital camara mounted to the tree.  He was harvested a few weeks later and was determined to be 7 1/2 years old.  Yes, this old 10 point buck was a shooter.

Healthy Deer

Bobby's Buck 2.JPG (1503577 bytes)

This 9 point (165 lb) buck was harvested at our 2005 MD Hunt by Bobby Harrell of Walterboro, South Carolina.   This was one of four deer harvested by eight MD hunters October 15-16, 2005.

There is no deer rack on the Scott Place wall that scores more points than this one done by Blakley Martin of Clinton, S. C.   He broke his neck in a diving accident.  A few years later, he drew and painted this picture by holding the brush with his teeth.  It was given to the Scott Place as a gift.  If you would like to buy an original painting from this young artist, send us an e-mail.
